Mock Debate for Lakewood Sixth Graders Studying Latin America
Posted 05/10/2018 02:00PM

To enhance their study of Latin America, Mr. Furlow's 6th grade Social Studies classes participated in the Rainforest Conference. The Lakewood Elementary students debated the question "How should the resources of the Amazon Rainforest be used?"

Students joined interest groups, learned their history and responded to debate proposals such as, "Should we allow citizens with legal land titles from the government to use force if necessary to protect their land claims?" One student even utilized Google Hangouts from their Google Classroom on Latin America to participate from her home, since she was out sick for the day. Student interest groups were awarded land based on the strength of their arguments and the actual history of the interest groups.
